New to Connecticut: Setting Up Home and Auto Insurance After an Out-of-State Move

What changes on your home and auto insurance when you move to Connecticut from another state, and why a licensed advisor reviews it instead of a quote calculator.
Your out-of-state policy does not automatically follow you here
Moving to Connecticut usually means your existing home and auto insurance needs a real review, not just an address change. Connecticut sets its own minimum auto liability requirements, its own approach to named-storm and hurricane deductibles on homeowners policies, and its own rules around things like flood risk disclosure. A policy written for another state's rules was never priced or structured around any of that.
What typically changes first
Auto. Most insurers require a Connecticut-registered vehicle to carry a Connecticut policy, or at minimum one that meets the state's requirements, within a set window after you establish residency. Waiting too long can leave a gap between when your old policy stops recognizing the address and when a Connecticut policy is in place.
Home. If you are buying rather than renting, your lender will require proof of insurance before closing, and the coverage has to reflect the home you are actually insuring - not a generic transplant of your old policy's limits. Rebuild cost, roof age, and proximity to the shoreline all factor differently into a Connecticut home policy than they may have where you moved from.
Why this is not a five-minute online form
An advisor reviewing a move-in case is looking at more than a rate. They are checking whether your prior claims history transfers cleanly, whether a coverage gap opens up between cancelling the old policy and binding the new one, and whether details like a home office, a rental property you kept in your previous state, or a teen driver on the policy change what you actually need. None of that is something an instant quote calculator is built to catch, which is why we do not use one.
What to have ready
Bringing your current declarations pages (home and auto), your VIN and registration information, and your closing date if you are buying a home lets an advisor put together an accurate picture in one conversation.
